  • Ukrainian drones targeted St. Petersburg's oil terminal before a major economic forum.
  • Attacks caused temporary closure of Pulkovo Airport and disruptions in mobile services.
  • President Putin will address the forum amidst increasing hostilities between Ukraine and Russia.

Early Wednesday morning, Ukrainian drones struck several infrastructure facilities in St. Petersburg, including an oil terminal, just hours before the opening of the annual St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a key event that attracts global investors. The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, confirmed that the attacks were part of a broader strategy to implement "long-range sanctions" against Russia, aiming to undermine its military capabilities by targeting energy resources, according to SCMP and Reuters.

The strikes resulted in plumes of smoke visible across the city and led to the temporary closure of Pulkovo Airport, causing delays and cancellations of more than 30 flights due to safety concerns. St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov reported that “several” locations were hit, without fatalities, although there was significant damage to infrastructure, according to reports from NPR and BBC.

Governor Alexander Drozdenko noted that Russian air defenses successfully intercepted 59 drones, highlighting ongoing tensions and the escalating conflict dynamics as both sides target critical infrastructures. The strikes also come after a recent wave of missile and drone attacks by Russia on Ukrainian cities, emphasizing the precarious situation as both nations engage in acts of retaliation, as per information from NPR and SCMP.

This year's St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, once a prestigious event frequented by global leaders, is under scrutiny due to diminished attendance from high-profile Western delegations since the ongoing war began. Zelensky's actions and subsequent statements during the attack highlight Ukraine's strategy of asserting its operational reach into Russian territory, which, according to his posts, plays a crucial role in achieving peace, maintaining a focus on targeting oil production and military facilities critical to Russia's war efforts, as stated by Reuters and BBC.
