On Monday, China's Coast Guard conducted "law enforcement" patrols in waters east of Taiwan, in response to Japan and the Philippines planning to commence maritime boundary delimitation talks. Beijing views these waters as part of its sovereign territory and referred to the discussions as "completely illegal, null and void," emphasizing that they infringe upon China's rights and interests, according to SCMP, Reuters, and India Times.
Following Japan and the Philippines' announcement of their plan for the maritime boundary negotiations, China affirmed that the patrols were necessary to assert its claims. China's Coast Guard stated, “This is a necessary action taken in response to Japan and the Philippines unilaterally announcing the initiation of maritime boundary delimitation negotiations,” reaffirming their view of the waters as belonging to China, according to SCMP and Reuters.
In reaction to the Chinese stance, Taiwan's government quickly rejected Beijing's claims, asserting that "China has no right to interfere in Taiwan's territorial sovereignty." This response illustrates Taiwan's ongoing resistance to China's territorial assertions, as tensions continue to escalate with increased Chinese military activities in the area, according to India Times and Reuters.
