A passenger bus crash on Interstate 95 in Virginia resulted in the deaths of five people and nearly three dozen injuries early Friday morning. The crash involved the bus striking six vehicles and occurred as traffic was slowing near a work zone, according to state police. The incident has led to charges of involuntary manslaughter against the bus driver, Jing S. Dong, 48, who also suffered injuries from the crash, reports CBS News, BBC, and India Times.
The crash reportedly began when Dong failed to slow down while approaching backed-up traffic, resulting in a chain reaction that involved multiple vehicles. Virginia prosecutor Eric Olsen stated that evidence gathered indicates Dong was driving in a "criminally negligent manner," as the bus was allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit a Chevrolet Suburban and several other vehicles. The investigation is ongoing, with the possibility of additional charges, according to BBC and India Times.
Among the victims were a family of four from Greenfield, Massachusetts, who were identified as Dmitri Doncev, his wife Ecaterina, their daughter Emily, and son Mark, aged 7. Additionally, 25-year-old Priscilla Mafalda from Worcester, Massachusetts, was killed while traveling in the Suburban that was initially struck. Reports indicate that 44 people were treated for injuries at nearby hospitals, with three suffering critical conditions, as per CBS News, BBC, and India Times.
