In a large-scale drone attack reportedly involving over 600 UAVs, Ukraine targeted several regions in Russia, with officials confirming at least four fatalities: three in the Moscow region and one in Belgorod. Russian authorities described this operation as one of the largest drone assaults the country has experienced in more than a year, with extensive damage reported in residential areas and local infrastructure, according to Reuters and Al Jazeera.
Moscow regional Governor Andrey Vorobyov indicated that a woman lost her life due to a drone striking a house in Khimki, while two men were killed in a more rural area. The region's infrastructure suffered, though the precise extent of damage remains unclear. In total, twelve injuries were reported, particularly near an oil refinery where drone debris fell, as detailed by BBC and India Times.
Russian military sources claimed their defenses intercepted and destroyed 556 drones, a figure indicating an unprecedented scale of these types of attacks against the country. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin of Moscow confirmed this, stating that a significant number of UAVs were intercepted in the capital, leading to fears and precautionary measures taken across the city, according to Le Monde and India Times.
Further complicating the situation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has vowed to continue such retaliatory operations in response to deadly Russian assaults on Ukrainian territories. Following a tragic attack in Kyiv which killed 24 people, Zelensky stated that retaliatory actions targeting Russian military infrastructure were essential and "entirely justified," highlighting the ongoing cycle of violence between the two nations, as reported by Reuters and BBC.
