  • US and Nigerian forces killed ISIS second-in-command Abu-Bilal al-Minuki in a joint operation.
  • Trump emphasized the operation's meticulous planning and its significance in combating global terrorism.
  • Nigerian President Tinubu hailed the mission as a major success in the fight against insurgency.

US President Donald Trump announced the killing of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, described as the second-in-command of ISIS globally, during a joint mission executed by US and Nigerian forces. Trump stated that the operation, which took place in the Lake Chad Basin, involved “brave American forces” and was a "meticulously planned and very complex mission" aimed at eliminating a key terrorist figure believed to be orchestrating attacks against the US and its interests, according to Channel News Asia, India Times, and South China Morning Post.

According to the reports, al-Minuki was sanctioned by the US in 2023 and was a pivotal figure in coordinating operations for ISIS in West Africa. Following the completion of the operation, Trump's social media post highlighted that al-Minuki had underestimated US intelligence capabilities, claiming he thought he could hide in Africa while being monitored by US sources, reports BBC and Al Jazeera.

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu confirmed the successful strike on al-Minuki's compound and noted that several lieutenants were also killed during the operation. He praised the joint effort as a decisive example of cooperation in combating terrorism and stated that it represented a considerable advancement in US-Nigeria relations, as highlighted by Le Monde and Africa News.

This operation marks a pivotal moment as Nigeria has faced numerous security challenges related to extremism and ongoing conflict from groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP. Despite al-Minuki’s removal, analysts suggest that while this killing represents a tactical victory, it may not bring about a long-term strategic change, as groups often adapt following the loss of key leaders, according to Los Angeles Times and India Times.
