  • Five Italian divers tragically died in a cave diving accident in the Maldives.
  • The victims included a marine biology professor and her daughter.
  • Rescue operations are ongoing though weather conditions are challenging.

Authorities in the Maldives confirmed that five Italian citizens have died in a scuba diving accident in Vaavu Atoll, a popular diving location in the Indian Ocean archipelago. The incident is believed to be the worst single diving accident in the Maldives, which is celebrated for its rich underwater tourism. The divers were exploring caves at depths of 50 to 60 meters (164 to 197 feet) when they reportedly went missing on Thursday, prompting a major search operation led by local authorities, according to BBC and CBS News.

The Foreign Ministry of Italy has been involved in communicating with the victims' families and has sent experts to assist with the recovery efforts. As of Friday, one body has been recovered, while efforts to find the remaining four are complicated by rough weather conditions in the region. "The coastguard and all relevant authorities are actively engaged in the search and recovery operation," stated Maldives Minister of Tourism Mohamed Ameen, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by search teams, according to South China Morning Post and CBS News.

Among the deceased are a noted marine biology professor from the University of Genoa, her daughter, and two young researchers, who were taking part in an expedition from a liveaboard dive boat. Local media report that the missing individuals had not returned from their diving trip, leading to the alarm. Diving incidents of this nature are rare in the Maldives; however, statistics reveal that at least 112 tourists have succumbed to various marine-related accidents over the past six years, with 42 linked specifically to diving or snorkeling activities, as reported by BBC, South China Morning Post, and CBS News.
