French health authorities have isolated more than 1,700 passengers and crew aboard the cruise ship Ambition in Bordeaux following the death of a 90-year-old passenger believed to be linked to a suspected gastroenteritis outbreak. About 50 others on board are displaying symptoms consistent with gastroenteritis, which is common on cruise ships, according to thelocal, BBC, and lemonde.
The cruise ship, which departed from the Shetland Islands on May 6, made stops in Belfast and Liverpool before arriving in Bordeaux. Local authorities confirmed that at least three passengers were isolated in their cabins, and the ship had been operating enhanced sanitation protocols due to the outbreak. There was no link identified between this incident and the hantavirus reported in a different ship, according to indiatimes, scmp, and channelnewsasia.
Health officials have begun further testing to confirm whether norovirus is the cause of illness aboard the ship. Initial tests ruled out norovirus but did not exclude other forms of foodborne illness. Gastroenteritis is highly contagious, and cruise operators typically implement strict protocols when such outbreaks occur, as further reiterated by reuters and lemonde.
