A 39-year-old man has been arrested in Austria following the discovery of rat poison in jars of baby food from the Swiss company HiPP. Authorities initiated the arrest after a jar containing rat poison was found in a supermarket in Eisenstadt, which led to the recall of HiPP products across Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, leaving the company "greatly relieved" by the arrest, according to BBC, Al Jazeera, and CBS News.
The arrest was made public by police in Burgenland and follows a criminal act classified under "intentional endangerment of the public." Five contaminated jars were recovered before consumption, which included jars identified by their 190-gram size, specifically containing carrots and potatoes for infants. Authorities have warned consumers to lookout for signs of tampering such as "a white sticker with a red circle," alongside damaged lids or missing safety seals, according to Al Jazeera and CBS News.
HiPP confirmed that it had been contacted by an extortionist demanding €2 million and assured that its products were not tainted during manufacturing. The company stated that they are cooperating with ongoing investigations to address the situation further. Health officials have advised parents to seek medical attention if their children exhibit symptoms such as bleeding or extreme weakness after consuming the affected products, according to BBC.
