A rescue team successfully released Timmy, a humpback whale that had been stranded in shallow waters near the German coast since March, into the North Sea on May 2. The whale, initially spotted near Germany’s Baltic Sea coast, faced serious health issues and generated significant international media attention during its prolonged distress. Local authorities approved the rescue, resulting in extensive public support for Timmy’s release, according to Channel News Asia and South China Morning Post.
At around 9 AM local time, Timmy was released approximately 70 kilometers from Skagen, Denmark, utilizing a specially designed water-filled barge for transport. Timmy exhibited signs of improved health, swimming freely shortly after its release. However, some experts cautioned that the whale’s prolonged period of being stranded and its serious physiological conditions may complicate its recovery, as noted by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and Al Jazeera.
Throughout the rescue efforts, significant public engagement and media coverage highlighted Timmy's plight, with live streams of attempts to coax the whale into deeper waters capturing widespread attention. Despite enthusiasm about the rescue, the IWC expressed concerns that the rescue operations, although well-intentioned, could impose additional stress on the already weak whale, according to NPR. The organization emphasized that any assessment of Timmy's recovery would require time and observation.
Before the release, rescuers applied zinc ointment to address a skin condition Timmy had developed due to the low salinity of the Baltic Sea. The use of a GPS transmitter attached to Timmy is expected to provide critical data on its behavior and help inform future rescue efforts, a strategy applauded by many involved in its rescue, according to the IWC and various media reports.
