  • The incident is linked to a surge in antisemitic attacks across the UK.
  • Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned the violence.
  • Counterterrorism police are investigating potential links to recent arson incidents.

A 45-year-old man has been arrested after stabbing two Jewish men in Golders Green, a neighborhood in London known for its large Jewish population. This attack is seen as part of a worrying trend of antisemitic violence in the UK, following a series of incidents including arson attacks on synagogues and community sites, according to CBS News, Channel News Asia, and Al Jazeera.

The incident occurred as the suspect was reportedly seen running along Golders Green Road with a knife, "attempting to stab Jewish members of the public," before being detained by the Jewish security organization Shomrim, who then alerted the police. The police used a stun gun to apprehend him. Both victims, a man in his 30s and another in his 70s, were hospitalized with knife wounds, as stated by Middle East Eye and LA Times.

This assault comes amidst heightened concerns over antisemitism in Britain, which has escalated following the Hamas assault on Israel in October 2023. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the attack as "deeply concerning," reinforcing that "attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain." Additionally, London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned the violence, emphasizing the need for collective action against antisemitism, according to SCMP, Le Monde, and Channel News Asia.

Moreover, counterterrorism police are investigating whether the stabbing is connected to prior arson attacks on Jewish sites in the area. In recent weeks, multiple incidents have targeted Jewish organizations, heightening community fears. On April 15, for instance, arson was committed against a synagogue in Finchley, leading to widespread alarm and several arrests, as reported by Al Jazeera, Middle East Eye, and LA Times.
