Former Israeli Prime Ministers Bennett and Lapid Merge Parties to Challenge Netanyahu

  • Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid announce a merger of their parties for upcoming elections.
  • Bennett will lead the newly formed party called Together.
  • This alliance aims to unify fragmented opposition against Prime Minister Netanyahu.
  • Both leaders criticize Netanyahu's handling of recent conflicts and seek to reform Israel's direction.
  • Polls suggest Netanyahu may be vulnerable in the upcoming elections.

In a significant political maneuver, former Israeli Prime Ministers Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid have joined forces to form a new political entity ahead of the upcoming elections. This alliance, which merges Bennett's party, Bennett 2026, and Lapid's There is a Future, is being branded as a united front against the long-standing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The new party will be called Together, with Bennett serving as its leader, according to Le Monde and India Times.

Lapid articulated their objective, highlighting that their collaboration marks the beginning of the "era of repair" for Israel, aiming to unite the political landscape that has become increasingly fragmented. He emphasized this step is crucial for the nation's future, stating, "The unification of the Yesh Atid party and the Bennett 2026 party into a single party will enable all efforts to be focused on leading Israel toward the necessary repair," as reported by Channel News Asia and Al Jazeera.

The two leaders have been vocal critics of Netanyahu's leadership, particularly concerning his approach to recent conflicts, including a devastating attack from Hamas on October 7, 2023. Both have described Netanyahu's governance as ineffective and have vowed to take a different path, addressing national security with promised reforms. Bennett noted, “With trust between us, I am taking the most Zionist and patriotic step we have ever taken for our country,” according to Le Monde and Al Jazeera.

Despite their political differences—Bennett being right-wing and Lapid centrist—their partnership aims to consolidate support among various political factions, especially as the election polls indicate a potential shift in power. Current surveys suggest that while Netanyahu's Likud party holds a lead, support for his government has diminished, potentially allowing a united opposition to gain traction, as emphasized in reports from India Times and Channel News Asia.
