  • Elon Musk skipped a voluntary interview with Paris prosecutors investigating X's AI content.
  • The probe includes allegations of child abuse material and Holocaust denial dissemination via Grok, X's chatbot.
  • French authorities previously searched X's offices amid claims of manipulation and misconduct.
  • The investigation gained international attention as it expands to includes potential violations of French law by an American company.
  • Musk criticized the investigations, labeling them as politically motivated attacks against free speech.

Elon Musk did not attend a scheduled voluntary interview with French prosecutors on April 20, 2026, as part of their ongoing investigation into his social media platform, X. This probe, which began in January 2025, has escalated to include allegations related to child sexual abuse material and the dissemination of Holocaust denial content through Grok, X's AI chatbot. French authorities stated they "took note of the absence" of the individuals summoned, but assured that their absence would not hinder the investigation's progress, according to Le Monde and The Local.

As part of the investigation, Paris prosecutors conducted a raid on the French offices of X back in February, a move criticized by Musk as a "political attack." The investigation centers on serious allegations, including complicity in the possession and dissemination of child pornography, denial of crimes against humanity, and manipulation of automated systems. These allegations intensified when Grok was implicated in generating sexually explicit deepfakes, resulting in significant public outcry, as reported by India Times, BBC, and LA Times.

The probe is reportedly part of a broader international response to content moderation issues stemming from Grok, which allegedly produced "sexualized images" of women and children on request, prompting investigations not only in France but also in the UK and the EU. A watchdog indicated that Grok managed to create millions of such images within a short time, highlighting grave concerns about the platform's algorithms, according to South China Morning Post and The Local.

Furthermore, the case has been complicated by reports that Musk's platform allegedly manipulated data to boost company valuations ahead of significant market events, leading to alert notifications to U.S. authorities about the activity. Musk's response to these allegations included criticism of the French request for assistance, labeling the circumstances as an overreach of the legal system, as discussed in LA Times and India Times.
