U.K. police are currently investigating whether a recent series of arson attacks on Jewish sites in London are linked to Iranian proxies. This inquiry follows a statement from the country's Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, who indicated that British Jews are experiencing a concerning rise in violence and intimidation, with no injuries reported so far from the incidents, which have included attacks at synagogues and a media company critical of Iran’s government, according to LA Times, Al Jazeera, and South China Morning Post.
The Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Policing unit is leading the investigations into these attacks. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans confirmed that the group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia has claimed responsibility and is being examined for potential connections to Iranian interests. This group is believed to have emerged only recently and has also claimed attacks on Jewish sites across Europe, highlighting a disturbing pattern of violence, according to LA Times and Al Jazeera.
The latest incident occurred at the Kenton United Synagogue, which received minor damage. Several previous attacks included the burning of Jewish charity ambulances in the Golders Green neighborhood, leading to an increased police presence in the area. Chief Rabbi Mirvis emphasized the urgency of the situation: “Thank God, no lives have been lost, but we cannot, and must not, wait for that to change,” he stated via social media, highlighting the seriousness of the threats against the Jewish community in the U.K., as reported by South China Morning Post and LA Times.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his dismay over the attacks, stating they are “abhorrent” and ensure that “those responsible will be found and brought to justice.” He condemned actions against the Jewish community as direct attacks on British values, reinforcing government resolve against such violence, as noted by Al Jazeera and South China Morning Post.
Security analysts have described Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia as possibly a "flag of convenience," claiming their assertions and capabilities should be approached with skepticism. Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes warned that those participating in such criminal acts will face severe consequences, indicating a strong stance against violence, according to LA Times, Al Jazeera, and South China Morning Post.
