A gunman has killed at least six people in Kyiv, Ukraine, before taking hostages and barricading himself in a supermarket. The incident occurred in the Holosiivskyi district, prompting a rapid response from the police who ultimately shot the attacker dead after a failed negotiation attempt, according to SCMP and Al Jazeera.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that special tactical police units stormed the supermarket after negotiations with the gunman, which lasted about 40 minutes, failed. “We tried to persuade him, knowing that there was likely a wounded person inside,” Klymenko stated, highlighting their attempts to communicate with the suspect, as noted in BBC and India Times.
During the standoff, the shooter was reported to be armed with a legally registered carbine. Klymenko mentioned that the gunman had approached licensing authorities recently to renew his weapons permit, submitting a medical certificate at that time.
