Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax fatally shot his wife, Cerina, multiple times before turning the gun on himself in their Annandale home just after midnight on Thursday, according to CBS News, India Times, and LA Times.
The Fairfaxs’ two teenage children were in the home at the time of the shooting. One of them made the emergency call, initially believing their mother had been stabbed. Police later found bullet casings near Cerina's body and confirmed both parents dead from gunshot wounds at the scene, according to Reuters and Al Jazeera.
Fairfax and his wife had been living apart but under the same roof while going through divorce proceedings. Police revealed that Fairfax had recently been served with court paperwork, a factor cited as possibly contributing to the tragedy. "This seems to be an ongoing domestic dispute surrounding a complicated or messy divorce," stated Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis, according to BBC.
The incident has shocked the community and political leaders, some of whom had worked closely with Fairfax during his tenure as lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022. He was previously seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party, but his career faced challenges amid sexual assault allegations in 2019, all of which he denied, as reported by CBS News and Reuters.
