  • Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris are free, returning to France after over three years in Iran.
  • French President Emmanuel Macron announced their release, expressing relief for their families.
  • The couple were held on espionage charges deemed unfounded by France.
  • Oman played a mediation role leading to their release and return.
  • Their release hints at a potential thaw in relations between Iran and France.

French nationals Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris are on their way back to France after being held for more than three years in Iran on espionage charges, which France called “unfounded.” President Emmanuel Macron announced their return, stating, “Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris are free and on their way to France” in a post on X. They were released from prison in November and had been staying at the French embassy in Tehran until their departure this week, according to Le Monde and South China Morning Post.

The release of Kohler and Paris follows a series of negotiations mediated by Oman, with Macron acknowledging their role in facilitating the process. “It’s a relief for us all, obviously for their families,” he added. The couple was initially detained in May 2022, after which France severely criticized their imprisonment, labeling it as inhumane and unjustified, according to Al Jazeera and South China Morning Post.

The couple's departure from Iran signifies an important step in Franco-Iranian relations, especially amid tensions surrounding the ongoing conflict involving the US and Israel. Macron has distanced France from the conflict, indicating a desire for neutrality while also addressing the complex issue of hostages. French officials have reported that the negotiations surrounding their release may have had wider diplomatic implications, as relations appear to be thawing, according to Le Monde, South China Morning Post, and Al Jazeera.
