  • Approximately 98 children have died due to a suspected measles outbreak in Bangladesh.
  • The health ministry recorded over 7,500 suspected infections among children aged six months to five years.
  • An emergency vaccination campaign is underway, targeting more than a million children at risk.
  • The outbreak has led to severe strain on local hospitals and health services across 56 districts.
  • Health officials attribute the outbreak to vaccine shortages and poor immunization programs.

Bangladesh is grappling with a severe measles outbreak that is feared to have killed at least 98 children in recent weeks. The health ministry's data indicates a worrying rise in suspected measles symptoms, which have reached 6,476 cases among children aged six months to five years. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has dispatched senior ministers to assess the situation and coordinate a nationwide response, highlighting the urgent nature of the crisis according to Channel News Asia and Al Jazeera.

The outbreak, which is significantly worse than previous years, has raised alarms among health officials. "Compared with past years, the number of affected children is higher, and the death toll is higher too," stated Halimur Rashid, director at the Communicable Disease Control. The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that measles is one of the most contagious diseases, easily spreading through coughing or sneezing. Concerns have been raised about the limited access to vaccines, which has hindered effective response efforts according to Reuters.

In response to the health crisis, Bangladesh has launched an emergency vaccination campaign targeting more than a million children, particularly those in the most affected districts. This initiative, which began in 18 high-risk areas, is a collaborative effort supported by UNICEF, the WHO, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. UNICEF has expressed significant concern regarding the sharp increase in measles cases, indicating that thousands of vulnerable children are at risk, according to Al Jazeera and Reuters.

The current situation has raised concerns about overcrowding in hospitals, especially in high-burden regions that are already operating with limited capacity. Health officials are pessimistic about the ongoing outbreak, which spans 56 out of 64 districts in Bangladesh, suggesting that the outbreak is set to expand further before the vaccination campaign can make a significant impact. “This campaign will help prevent further tragic loss of young lives,” remarked WHO representative Dr. Ahmed Jamsheed Mohamed, highlighting the campaign's pivotal role in mitigating the outbreak according to Reuters and Channel News Asia.
