India Resumes Oil Imports from Iran After Seven-Year Hiatus Amid Ongoing Middle East Conflict

  • India resumes oil imports from Iran for the first time in seven years amid Middle East turmoil.
  • The Indian oil ministry confirmed no payment issues for Iranian crude imports.
  • US waivers on sanctions have facilitated India's ability to secure Iranian oil.
  • India's overall energy security remains fully secured despite regional conflicts.
  • India imported 44,000 metric tons of Iranian liquefied petroleum gas recently.

India has officially announced the resumption of oil purchases from Iran, marking its first imports from the country since May 2019. The decision comes amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has significantly disrupted oil supplies globally, especially affecting Asian countries, according to Reuters and AA.

The Indian Ministry of Petroleum has confirmed that refiners have secured their crude oil requirements and emphasized that there are no payment hurdles related to these imports. This reaffirmation comes after earlier reports suggested potential issues with payments, which the ministry has labeled as "factually incorrect," according to AA and India Times.

India's renewed engagement with Iranian oil follows a temporary lifting of U.S. sanctions on Iranian oil and refined products last month, which aimed at easing international supply shortages. The recent disruptions caused by the U.S.-Israel conflict, which has intensified tensions in the region, have further highlighted the urgency for India to diversify its energy sources, as nearly 35–40 percent of its oil imports transit through the critical Strait of Hormuz, according to Reuters and India Times.

In addition to crude oil, India has also received Iranian liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Recently, a vessel carrying approximately 44,000 metric tons of Iranian LPG arrived at the western port of Mangalore, further facilitating India’s efforts to secure energy supplies amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions, according to Reuters and AA.
