  • Trump sets a 48-hour deadline for Iran to make a deal or face military action.
  • The ultimatum comes as diplomatic talks continue over the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Experts warn attacks on civilian energy infrastructure might constitute war crimes.

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a fresh ultimatum to Iran, stating it has 48 hours to make a deal regarding the vital Strait of Hormuz or face dire consequences. This announcement was made on his Truth Social platform, where he reiterated an earlier 10-day deadline that expired on April 6, 2026. Trump stressed, "Time is running out—48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them," and he affirmed, "Glory be to GOD!" according to SCMP and Channel News Asia.

Trump's ultimatum follows a series of escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran, especially after a recent F-15 fighter jet crash in Iranian territory. Although Trump did not mention this incident, it adds to the precarious situation. He had previously warned that Iran's failure to open the Strait of Hormuz would result in the destruction of its energy plants. Experts have cautioned that targeting civilian infrastructure could constitute war crimes, a sentiment echoed in previous warnings concerning escalating military actions, according to Al Jazeera and India Times.

Despite the threats, the Trump administration has indicated a preference for a diplomatic solution, with Trump stating that "very good and productive conversations" had been taking place. He previously delayed military action against Iranian energy infrastructure at the request of Tehran, which continues to express openness to negotiations. However, the Iranian government has also rejected certain proposals from the U.S., complicating the diplomatic landscape, as noted by Channel News Asia and Al Jazeera.
