Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro received permission from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes to serve his 27-year sentence for a coup attempt at home due to his deteriorating health. Bolsonaro has been hospitalized since March 13 for pneumonia, among other health issues stemming from a stabbing incident in 2018, placing significant strain on his overall well-being, according to SCMP and Reuters.
The decision allows Bolsonaro, who governed from 2019 to 2022, to reside in a monitored environment at a gated community in Brasilia under a "humanitarian house arrest." His house arrest is subject to reassessment after 90 days to determine if he meets the necessary health criteria for its continuation, as stated by Justice De Moraes, according to Los Angeles Times and Reuters.
Under the terms set forth by De Moraes, Bolsonaro is prohibited from using any communication devices or accessing visitors other than family and medical professionals. Failure to adhere to these conditions could result in a return to prison. Bolsonaro’s legal team had been advocating for this arrangement since his conviction, citing his health-related constraints, according to Los Angeles Times and SCMP.
Bolsonaro was sentenced in November 2022 for orchestrating a coup following his electoral defeat to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The situation has garnered significant attention, especially as one of his sons, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, is poised to run for president in the upcoming election, further highlighting the ongoing political implications of Bolsonaro’s legal status, according to Los Angeles Times, Reuters, and SCMP.
