Delta Air Lines announced on Tuesday the suspension of special services for members of Congress, attributing the decision to the effects of a partial government shutdown that has severely disrupted U.S. air travel. The airline stated, “Due to the impact on resources from the longstanding government shutdown, Delta will temporarily suspend specialty services to members of Congress flying Delta," reinforcing its primary commitment to safety and customer care in these strained circumstances, according to Reuters and South China Morning Post.
Travelers have experienced significant delays at security checkpoints, as many TSA officers have resigned or are absent due to their ongoing lack of pay since mid-February. This situation has resulted in staffing shortages at major U.S. airports, leading Delta to halt its usual special services, which often include VIP treatment and assistance to members of Congress, according to CBS News and South China Morning Post.
The disruption in operations comes as members of Congress face the same inconveniences as other travelers, with limited access to essential services while waiting in long lines. Delta’s CEO, Ed Bastian, highlighted the unacceptable situation for TSA workers, stating it is "inexcusable" to use them as "political chits" while emphasizing the need for better support amidst the shutdown, as reported by Reuters and CBS News.
