Elon Musk has unveiled plans for the Terafab project, a groundbreaking initiative to manufacture advanced chips in Austin, Texas, which will be managed jointly by Tesla and SpaceX. This facility will not only produce chips for Tesla's vehicles and humanoid robots but also for AI data centers in space, as noted during Musk’s presentation at a downtown Austin venue attended by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, according to Bangkok Post and Reuters.
The Terafab will initially function as an “advanced technology fab” equipped to create and test various chip types, with a future goal of producing potentially one terawatt of computing power annually. Musk claims this facility will be necessary to meet the rapidly increasing chip demands driven by advancements in AI and robotics. “We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips,” he stated, highlighting the urgency of the project, according to India Times, Bangkok Post, and Reuters.
Musk detailed that one of the chips will be tuned for Tesla's vehicles and humanoid robots, while the other will be designed for a high-power environment suitable for space application. The project embodies a significant shift as Musk indicated previous suppliers could not meet the anticipated demands for chips, highlighting his commitment to vertical integration within his companies, as reported by India Times and Reuters.
As a part of the project, Musk presented plans for launching AI-capable satellites, showcasing a vision where these units could significantly enhance computing power and efficiency in space. “We expect future satellites to probably go to the megawatt range,” Musk referenced during the reveal, reflecting a broader ambition within the tech landscape, according to India Times and Bangkok Post.
