He noted that while criticism of the judiciary is not inherently damaging, excessive intemperance from public officials can lead to dangerous reactions from others. “Public officials certainly have a right to criticize the work of the judiciary,” Roberts emphasized, adding that they must be cautious with their language as it can have real-world implications.

Moreover, the Chief Justice referenced ongoing concerns regarding high-profile decisions made by the Supreme Court that have incited partisan backlash, including rulings related to abortion rights and the immunity granted to former President Donald Trump. In his report, Roberts suggested that the ongoing “storm of partisan rhetoric” jeopardizes the Court's credibility, implying that it might empower those seeking to openly defy the Court's authority.
