Baghdad experienced significant drone and rocket attacks targeting the US embassy early Tuesday, marking the most intense assault since the escalation of the US-Israel war with Iran on February 28, according to Reuters, Anadolu Agency, and South China Morning Post.
Explosive-laden drones targeted the embassy compound, with air defense systems intercepting two of the three drones. The third drone struck an outer wall, leading to a fire in the area, resulting in debris scattered across Baghdad and damaging surrounding buildings, according to reports from Anadolu Agency and Al Jazeera.
In the wake of these attacks, security officials highlighted an increasing number of assaults against US interests in Iraq, related to the activities of Iran-backed groups. The Kataib Hezbollah group has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks, calling for the expulsion of all foreign troops from Iraq, as stated by sources from South China Morning Post and Al Jazeera.
With the escalating cycle of violence, the US embassy remains a focal point amid broader geopolitical tensions. On the same day, Iraqi forces closed the fortified Green Zone after the attacks, as security concerns grow, according to Reuters and Anadolu Agency.
