  • Lebanon sees a rapid rise in displaced individuals, exceeding 667,000.
  • The UN reports a significant increase of over 100,000 displacements in just one day.
  • More than 120,000 people are currently sheltered in government-designated sites.
  • Cross-border movements into Syria also reported as families flee violence.
  • The UNHCR is severely underfunded in its response to the crisis.

According to the UN refugee agency, nearly 700,000 people have been displaced across Lebanon due to intensified conflict in just over a week. The situation worsened following Israeli airstrikes and evacuation warnings that forced families to flee their homes rapidly, with over 100,000 people displaced in a single day. Karolina Lindholm Billing, the UNHCR representative in Lebanon, remarked, "Lives have been upended on a massive scale," highlighting the dire circumstances many families face, according to Reuters, AA, and Dawn.

Currently, approximately 120,000 displaced individuals are residing in government-designated shelters, while many others seek temporary housing with friends and relatives. The rapid increase in displacement has raised concerns over humanitarian access and public health risks, with overcrowding in shelters posing potential for disease outbreaks. The UNHCR has delivered around 168,000 emergency relief items to assist those affected, but the agency's Lebanon response is reportedly only 14% funded, emphasizing the urgent need for increased support, according to Reuters and AA.

The conflict has also triggered significant cross-border movements, with reports indicating over 78,000 Syrians and more than 7,700 Lebanese fleeing into Syria. Many of these families are experiencing repeated displacements, compounding their trauma and fear. As the violence escalates, it inflicts immense suffering on civilians, further destabilizing Lebanon and the broader region, according to AA and Dawn.
