  • George Russell secures his first win at the Australian Grand Prix, leading Mercedes to a 1-2 finish.
  • Russell finished nearly three seconds ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli.
  • Charles Leclerc of Ferrari struggled to maintain pace, finishing over 15 seconds behind.
  • The race featured a dramatic early lead exchange between Russell and Leclerc.
  • Local favorite Oscar Piastri was ruled out after a crash before the race began.

George Russell dominated the Australian Grand Prix, securing an impressive victory for Mercedes at Melbourne's Albert Park Circuit. Starting from pole position, Russell finished nearly three seconds ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli, with Charles Leclerc of Ferrari trailing over 15 seconds behind. The victory highlighted Mercedes' strong pre-season form and Russell’s capability, showcasing a thrilling lead exchange between the two drivers early on, where they swapped positions several times in the initial laps, according to Reuters and SCMP.

The decisive moment of the race involved a virtual safety car that prompted Mercedes to quickly pit both Russell and Antonelli, optimizing their strategy against Ferrari, who chose to remain out. This decision ultimately cost Ferrari a chance to contend for victory as Russell controlled the race from there. "Great job everybody, it’s been a long time since we’ve been here," Russell remarked post-race, signaling his team's success, according to India Times and Reuters.

In a disappointing turn for local fans, Oscar Piastri crashed before the race could commence, finishing his home race prematurely. Teammate Lando Norris managed a fifth place finish, just behind seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton in fourth, while Max Verstappen recovered to sixth place after starting from the back of the grid, according to SCMP and India Times.
