The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has reduced sanctions on seven footballers who represented Malaysia and were found to have used falsified naturalisation documents. They will now serve a 12-month suspension from official matches only, rather than facing a ban from all football-related activities. Among those affected is Deportivo Alaves' Facundo Garces and six others, including Gabriel Arrocha and Rodrigo Holgado, who were implicated after the use of doctored documents permitted them to play in an Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam, according to SCMP and Channel News Asia.
CAS's ruling allows the players to continue training with their clubs during the ban, as the Panel concluded that the penalty was reasonable given the players' roles in the infraction. However, the ruling maintained a fine of CHF 350,000 (approximately US$450,000) against the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) for its involvement, as reported by Reuters and SCMP.
