  • France is sending the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean amid escalating tensions due to the Iran conflict.
  • President Macron cites threats to maritime routes and regional allies' security as reasons for the deployment.
  • Increased military assets include air defense systems sent to Cyprus after drone strikes on a UK base.
  • Macron condemns recent US-Israeli strikes as unlawful while holding Iran responsible for growing hostilities.
  • The move aims to secure Europe's economic interests amidst soaring energy prices and regional instability.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced the deployment of the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean as a response to the escalating conflict in the Middle East following attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran. He stated, "I have ordered the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, its air assets, and its escort of frigates to set course for the Mediterranean," emphasizing the need to secure regional allies and European interests in the face of conflict, according to Le Monde, South China Morning Post, and Africanews.

As part of this deployment, Macron mentioned the addition of air defense capabilities to Cyprus, particularly after Iranian-made drones struck a British air force base on the island. "We reacted immediately and shot down drones in self-defense in the early hours of the conflict to defend the airspace of our allies," he noted, underscoring France's commitment to protecting nations in the region, as highlighted by Le Monde and South China Morning Post.

During his address, Macron also pointed out that the deployment stems from threats to shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz and the rising energy prices linked to the ongoing hostilities. "We have taken the initiative to build a coalition to secure these sea lanes that are essential to the global economy," he mentioned, asserting the importance of safeguarding maritime commerce, as reported by Africanews.

Macron's response included strong condemnation of the military actions taken by the US and Israel, stating that they were conducted "outside international law" and reiterating Iran's role in escalating tensions through its nuclear program and regional military activities. "It is Iran that developed a dangerous nuclear program and unprecedented ballistic capabilities," he said, reflecting France's stance in the international dialogue regarding the conflict, according to Le Monde, South China Morning Post, and Africanews.
