Early Sunday morning, a shooting at Buford's bar in Austin, Texas, resulted in the deaths of three people, including the suspected gunman, and left 14 others injured, according to SCMP. Police reports indicate that the shooter arrived in an SUV, initially fired a pistol at patrons from his vehicle, then exited with a rifle and continued to shoot at individuals nearby.
The Austin Police Chief, Lisa Davis, noted that this was not the first shooting incident in this nightlife district, which has seen multiple high-profile occurrences over the years. In relation to the current incident, the FBI's Acting Special Agent in Charge, Alex Doran, stated that "there were indicators on the subject and in his vehicle that indicate potential nexus to terrorism," although he emphasized that it's "still too early to make a determination on that," according to BBC and LA Times.
Emergency Medical Services reported that out of the 14 injured, three are in critical condition. The fast police response was highlighted by several officials, including Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, who stated, "They definitely saved lives," as officers confronted the shooter within a minute of the first emergency call, according to BBC and SCMP.
In the aftermath, the scene outside Buford's bar remained chaotic, with reports of overturned furniture and abandoned belongings from those fleeing the shooting. Some victims were also identified as individuals connected to the University of Texas, as expressed by the school's president, saying their prayers are with "the victims and all those impacted," citing LA Times.
