  • The resignation is part of an ongoing investigation into Epstein's connections.
  • Summers has been on leave since November 2025 pending this review.
  • Emails released indicate extensive communication between Summers and Epstein.
  • Summers plans to engage in research and commentary following his retirement.

Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers is set to resign from his teaching role at Harvard University amid a review of his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Harvard confirmed that Summers will leave at the end of the academic year while remaining on leave until then, according to CBS News.

Summers, who served as Treasury Secretary under President Bill Clinton and later as Harvard's president, expressed gratitude in his resignation statement for the opportunities he had at the university over the past 50 years. "This decision was difficult," Summers stated, indicating his future focus would be on research and analysis rather than teaching, according to BBC, Reuters, and Los Angeles Times.

His resignation follows revelations from released government documents showing extensive correspondence between him and Epstein. The files indicated Summers maintained these communications long after Epstein's 2008 conviction and included discussions on personal matters, which have raised concerns about his judgment, noted Business Insider and Le Monde.

Many public figures have faced scrutiny over their associations with Epstein, and as part of ongoing investigations, Summers previously resigned from his positions on various boards and committees, including the OpenAI board. He emphasized that he takes full responsibility for his decisions regarding communications with Epstein, which he termed as misguided, according to South China Morning Post and India Times.
