Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was evacuated from his residence on Tuesday following a bomb threat directed at the Shen Yun dance group, which is banned in China. The threats, contained in emails written in Chinese, warned that explosives would be detonated at the Prime Minister's Lodge if the group proceeded with its Australian performances. One email ominously stated, "If you insist on proceeding with the performance, then the Prime Minister's Lodge will be blown into ruins and blood will flow like a river," according to BBC, Reuters, and India Times.
Police confirmed they responded to an "alleged security incident" at the Lodge but located "nothing suspicious." Albanese returned to his residence after several hours and expressed his gratitude to the police and those concerned about his safety, sharing a light-hearted photo of his dog on social media. "Toto on alert but all good," he wrote, as reported by BBC and Reuters.
Shen Yun’s representatives stated that they appreciate the safety precautions taken by law enforcement and affirmed their intention to proceed with the scheduled performances despite the threats, which have been recognized as part of a broader issue affecting the group worldwide, linked to its foundation by the Falun Gong movement. A similar recent incident in the U.S. forced an evacuation at the Kennedy Center, highlighting the risks faced by Shen Yun, according to India Times and Reuters.
