  • Australian PM Anthony Albanese evacuated due to bomb threat linked to Shen Yun performance.
  • Shen Yun, a troupe banned in China, received threats regarding performances in Australia.
  • Authorities confirmed no explosives were found after an extensive search.

A bomb threat led to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's evacuation from his official residence in Canberra, based on alarming emails sent to the Shen Yun dance group, which is set to perform in Australia. The emails demanded the cancellation of performances or implied explosives would be detonated at the Lodge, Albanese's residence. One of the messages, written in Chinese, warned, "If you insist on proceeding with the performance, then the Prime Minister's Lodge will be blown into ruins and blood will flow like a river," according to India Times.

The Australian Federal Police, after being alerted, confirmed they conducted a search at the residence and found no suspicious materials. Albanese was relocated for several hours while the investigation continued, and authorities reported that there was no ongoing risk, according to Reuters and BBC.

Shen Yun, associated with the Falun Gong, has faced threats worldwide, particularly as it continues its performances across various countries, marketed as cultural events but often critiqued for political undertones. As stated, "We appreciate the steps taken to ensure public safety and to protect elected officials, including the prime minister," affirmed Shen Yun's local organizers, emphasizing their ongoing commitment to perform despite such threats. This situation has led to discussions about the need to de-escalate political tensions, a sentiment echoed by Albanese, who expressed how vital it is to "not take these things for granted," as reported by Anadolu Agency and India Times.
