  • Achraf Hakimi to stand trial for alleged rape of a young woman in February 2023.
  • Hakimi denies the allegations and claims the charges are unjust.
  • His lawyer asserts the trial is based on insufficient evidence.
  • The case underscores ongoing issues regarding the #MeToo movement in men's football.
  • PSG coach Luis Enrique states the matter is in the hands of authorities.

Moroccan football star and Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi is set to stand trial for allegedly raping a young woman at his home in February 2023. Upon hearing about his trial status, Hakimi publicly stated on social media, "Today, a rape accusation is enough to justify a trial, even though I deny it and everything proves it’s false," highlighting the gravity of the situation according to Al Jazeera, Le Monde, and Reuters.

The allegations date back to when a 24-year-old woman reported to the police in Val-de-Marne that she had been raped after meeting Hakimi through Instagram. According to the woman, following a series of consensual actions, he proceeded to assault her. Following her report, a preliminary investigation was launched, leading to the current trial status reported by Middle East Eye and Africa News.

Hakimi’s lawyer, Fanny Colin, has emphasized the trial's basis on what she describes as flawed evidence, noting that the allegations rest solely on the woman's word, as she "obstructed all investigations" and refused medical examinations. She plans to appeal the committal order if it is denied, which could further affect Hakimi's career with PSG, who will face Monaco in an upcoming match according to Africa News and Reuters.
