Blizzard warnings have been issued for New York City, parts of New Jersey, and Connecticut as a major storm is set to impact the East Coast starting Sunday. The National Weather Service (NWS) projects that over 14 million people are at risk, marking the first blizzard warning for New York City in nine years, with expected accumulations of 1 to 2 feet of snow in various regions, particularly in coastal areas, according to CBS News and Reuters.
The storm is anticipated to produce heavy snow and strong winds from Sunday through Monday with snowfall rates reaching up to 2 inches per hour, particularly during the night. Warnings indicate that whiteout conditions may develop, making travel extremely hazardous. New York City’s Mayor Zohran Mamdani has advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, emphasizing, "If you can stay home, stay home," according to NPR and CBS News.
The NWS has also cautioned that the heavy, wet snow could lead to power outages due to fallen trees and downed power lines, while high winds gusting up to 70 mph increase the risk of coastal flooding. Additionally, significant transportation disruptions, including flight cancellations, are likely as conditions deteriorate on Sunday night, according to NPR and Reuters.
