  • Ukraine officials will boycott the 2026 Paralympics over Russian participation.
  • Ukrainian athletes will still compete, but no officials will attend.
  • Ten athletes from Russia and Belarus will compete under their flags.
  • Ukraine's sports minister condemns the decision as "disappointing and outrageous."
  • European officials also criticize the move, highlighting its political implications.

Ukraine will boycott the upcoming Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympics due to the decision allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their national flags. Sports Minister Matvii Bidnyi stated that while Ukrainian athletes will still participate, no officials would attend any events of the Games, declaring the situation as "disappointing and outrageous," according to Reuters and Al Jazeera.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) recently reversed a three-year ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes, allowing them to compete under their national flags, which has sparked outrage from Ukraine and other European officials. Bidnyi emphasized that these flags "have no place at international sporting events that stand for fairness, integrity, and respect," according to Reuters and CBS News.

In total, the IPC confirmed that six athletes from Russia and four from Belarus would participate, demonstrating the contentious nature of this decision amid ongoing conflict. Ukrainian athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych, who earlier faced disqualification for displaying a helmet honoring Ukrainian casualties, also expressed his frustration, stating that the IPC's actions feel like "a campaign against the Ukrainian nation," according to Reuters and Al Jazeera.

This situation has garnered broader condemnation, with European officials, including the EU Commissioner for Sport, echoing Ukraine's stance. They labeled the IPC's decision as "unacceptable," particularly while Russia's aggression against Ukraine persists, indicating significant political implications surrounding the games, as detailed in reports from CBS News and Reuters.
