A regional train carrying approximately 80 passengers derailed early on Monday near the village of Goppenstein in southern Switzerland due to an avalanche. The incident, which took place around 7:00 am local time, has left five people injured, with one requiring hospitalization. Rescue teams have evacuated more than two dozen passengers from the affected carriages as police warned that injuries were likely, according to Indiatimes and Le Monde.
The avalanche crossed the tracks just before the train's passage, with Swiss authorities confirming a level four avalanche warning for the region, which is the second-highest. The train service between Goppenstein and Brig has been interrupted, and police have launched an investigation into the incident. Heavy snowfall contributed to the avalanche risks in the area, where authorities had previously reported multiple avalanche-related accidents, according to Al Jazeera and Le Monde.
Rescue operations remain ongoing as safety assessments continue. Meanwhile, transportation in the region has been severely affected, with authorities advising caution in light of adverse weather conditions. Other regions of the Alps have also faced avalanche incidents in recent days, further highlighting the dangerous conditions across mountainous areas, according to Al Jazeera and Indiatimes.
