  • Marco Rubio confirms US is "not disputing" European findings on Navalny's poisoning.
  • European nations state Navalny was poisoned with a rare toxin from poison dart frogs.
  • Russia continues to deny responsibility, calling the allegations a "Western propaganda hoax."
  • The analysis indicated the presence of epibatidine, a toxin not found naturally in Russia.
  • Navalny died in prison in February 2024 under controversial circumstances.

During a recent press conference in Bratislava, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the findings of five European countries regarding the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. He stated that the US is "not disputing" the conclusions reached, recognizing it as a "troubling report" while specifying that the US did not formally join the findings due to differing diplomatic engagements. Rubio stated, "We obviously are aware of the report... and certainly... we don't have any reason to question it," according to Indiatimes, Reuters, and Channel News Asia.

The joint statement issued by the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands detailed laboratory analyses that "conclusively" identified epibatidine in samples taken from Navalny's body. This toxin, which originates from South American poison dart frogs, is not found naturally in Russia, prompting further scrutiny of Russian state actions. The European nations concluded that Russia had the "means, motive and opportunity" to carry out the poisoning, as reported by Indiatimes, Reuters, and Channel News Asia.

In response to questions regarding the US's absence from signing the joint statement, Rubio clarified that it was a coordinated effort by the European nations and emphasized that the US does not intend to engage in a dispute with them over their findings. "Those countries came to that conclusion. They coordinated that. We chose - Doesn't mean we disagree with the outcome," he stated, highlighting the importance of intelligence collaboration, according to Indiatimes, Reuters, and Channel News Asia.
