US Not Disputing European Report on Navalny Poisoning; Kremlin Firmly Rejects Claims

Credited from: SCMP

  • US Secretary of State Rubio acknowledges a European report on Navalny's poisoning.
  • Russia categorically rejects claims, calling them "biased and baseless."
  • European nations cite epibatidine toxin linking Navalny's death to poisoning.
  • Calls for justice intensify from Navalny's family amid international scrutiny.
  • Sanctions against Russia may be considered in light of the findings.

The US government has expressed that it is "not disputing" a troubling report by five European nations regarding the poisoning of the imprisoned Russian opposition leader, Alexei Navalny. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the findings from Britain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden, which indicated that Navalny was poisoned with epibatidine, a toxin derived from poison dart frogs, were taken seriously. Rubio noted that while the US did not formally join the European statement, it does not imply a disagreement with its conclusions, highlighting the seriousness of the circumstances surrounding Navalny's death in February 2024 while serving a 19-year prison sentence, according to SCMP and Africanews.

In a sharp rebuttal, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov condemned the European allegations, insisting they are unfounded and politically motivated. He asserted that "we naturally do not accept such accusations" and characterized them as biased and baseless. The Kremlin's assertion follows a joint statement from European countries suggesting that only the Russian state had both the means and the motive to execute such a poisoning, as Navalny was in custody at the time, according to India Times and Reuters.

The findings indicated that laboratory analyses detected epibatidine in samples from Navalny's body, which has raised alarms about potential state-sponsored homicide. This coincides with recent calls from the UK for potential sanctions against Russia in response to the findings. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper highlighted that only the Russian regime had the necessary capabilities and motives to employ this lethal agent, as stated in reports from various European foreign offices, according to CBS News and Channel News Asia.

Navalny’s mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, expressed hope for justice as the European report seems to validate her long-held belief that her son was murdered. She underscored the family’s resolve to seek accountability for his death, while also appealing for an investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, reinforced the demand for justice through social media, indicating that the truth of his murder is increasingly recognized, as detailed by BBC and Al Jazeera.
