Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has experienced a severe loss of vision, reportedly left with only 15% vision in his right eye. His lawyer Salman Safdar informed the Supreme Court that this deterioration is a result of alleged neglect by prison authorities, particularly for not responding to his complaints about blurred vision over the past three months, according to BBC and Al Jazeera.
Reports indicate that Khan's vision issues began approximately three to four months ago, culminating in significant health concerns that led Safdar to submit a detailed report to the court after visiting Khan in prison. In this context, Khan's lawyer expressed that prolonged neglect might pose serious risks to Khan's health, including the risk of permanent vision loss, as stated in Reuters and Al Jazeera.
The Supreme Court's intervention followed the alarming details provided in Safdar's report, which highlighted that Khan had been denied timely medical intervention despite persistent complaints regarding his eyesight. The court has ordered a medical team to assess Khan's condition and ensure he has access to his personal physician by February 16, according to BBC and Reuters.
Khan has been incarcerated in Adiala Jail since August 2023 and is facing numerous charges, including corruption, which he describes as politically motivated attacks orchestrated by the military. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, which Khan founded, has condemned the conditions of his imprisonment and the handling of his health issues, asserting that any harm to Khan will be held accountable, as reported by BBC and Reuters.
