  • U.S. proposes June deadline for Ukraine-Russia peace talks
  • Ongoing Russian attacks strain Ukraine's energy infrastructure
  • Zelensky criticizes Russia's tactics amid negotiations
  • Next round of talks set for Miami, focusing on ceasefire conditions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the United States aims to finalize negotiations to end the war with Russia by June, emphasizing the urgency of achieving a peace agreement. "The Americans are proposing that the parties end the war by the beginning of this summer," Zelensky stated, reflecting on the upcoming U.S. midterm elections as a motivator for this timeline, according to SCMP and India Times.

Following recent US-brokered discussions in Abu Dhabi, Zelensky confirmed upcoming trilateral talks in Miami, which will involve both Ukrainian and Russian representatives. He underscored a lack of significant breakthroughs from the earlier negotiations, although both parties agreed to exchange prisoners of war, a positive note amidst challenging circumstances, according to India Times and NPR.

The urgency of a peace agreement comes as Russia continues its aggressive aerial assaults, which involved more than 400 drones and around 40 missiles targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. These attacks have left large areas without essential services amid severe winter conditions, negatively impacting millions of Ukrainians, as Zelensky reported on social media, according to India Times and NPR.

Zelensky has criticized Russia for taking advantage of the harsh winter to exert pressure on Ukraine and underscored the necessity of halting strikes on energy targets as part of any ceasefire agreement. He stated, "Every day, Russia could choose real diplomacy, but it chooses new strikes," reaffirming Ukraine's resolve to negotiate but warning against Russia's history of violating agreements, according to SCMP and NPR.

The complexities of the negotiations remain evident, particularly concerning territorial disputes over the Donbas region, which Russia insists must be addressed for any peace deal. Zelensky reiterated, "We stand where we stand," affirming Ukraine's position in the face of Russian demands, according to SCMP and India Times.
