A grand jury in New Mexico has indicted actor Timothy Busfield on four counts of criminal sexual contact with a child. The charges stem from allegations that Busfield, known for his roles in "The West Wing" and "Thirtysomething," abused two twin boys, who were seven and eight years old during the production of the Fox crime drama "The Cleaning Lady," according to ABC News and Los Angeles Times.
The Bernalillo County District Attorney's Office confirmed the indictment on February 6, reiterating that the case will be managed by its Special Victims Unit as it moves toward trial. District Attorney Sam Bregman emphasized that "protecting children remains a top priority for his office," as reflected in statements made via social media channels, as reported by CBS News and Reuters.
Busfield was arrested on January 13 after authorities received a complaint regarding the alleged abuse, which reportedly occurred over the course of the show's production in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Allegations included inappropriate touching of the boys, who are now eleven years old. Busfield denied the charges in a video statement prior to his arrest, calling the claims "lies" and expressing confidence he would be exonerated, according to ABC News and Los Angeles Times.
His legal representation has stated that the case is "fundamentally unsound," arguing that it cannot be proven at trial. They cited perceived weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence based on preliminary hearings, as documented by CBS News.
