At least 15 migrants died after their speedboat collided with a Greek Coast Guard vessel off the island of Chios late on Tuesday. Greek authorities reported that the migrant boat was involved in dangerous manoeuvres at the time of the collision, prompting the Coast Guard to intervene. A search and rescue operation is currently ongoing, involving patrol boats, a helicopter, and divers, according to Reuters and Al Jazeera.
The Cyprus coast guard confirmed that of the 24 individuals rescued, which included two coast guard officers, many suffered severe injuries. Reports indicated that among the injured were seven children and a pregnant woman, heightening concerns over the vulnerability of migrants traversing perilous routes. This information was reinforced by BBC and South China Morning Post.
The incident has spotlighted Greece's controversial treatment of migrants, particularly in the context of tightening migration policies and alleged pushbacks at its borders. Greece experienced a significant migration crisis in 2015, but recent measures have focused on controlling crossings, including increasing patrols and implementing stricter border controls. These developments have raised questions regarding human rights violations in Greece, as noted by Reuters, Al Jazeera, and South China Morning Post.
