  • An Australian woman, 22, died after becoming trapped in a ski lift in Japan.
  • The incident occurred at Tsugaike Mountain Resort in Nagano.
  • Her backpack's buckle caught in the lift, causing her to be suspended in mid-air.
  • The resort pledged to improve safety and cooperate with investigations.
  • Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed her death.

An Australian woman has died after becoming trapped in a ski lift at Tsugaike Mountain Resort in Nagano, Japan. The 22-year-old was using the chairlift when a loose buckle on her backpack snagged, leaving her suspended in mid-air. Subsequently, she suffered a heart attack and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to BBC.

The incident took place on Friday morning, prompting a swift response from resort personnel who stopped the lift by pressing an emergency button. Tsuneo Kubo, president of the Tsugaike Gondola Lift Co, stated, "Because the chest strap was fastened, the backpack could not be removed from the [woman's] body," causing her to be dragged after attempting to disembark. First aid was administered immediately, but unfortunately, the woman did not survive, according to SCMP and Channel News Asia.
