Peter Mandelson has resigned from the Labour Party amid renewed scrutiny regarding his past connections with Jeffrey Epstein. In his resignation letter, Mandelson expressed he did not wish to "cause further embarrassment" to the party, especially following the release of new documents by the U.S. Department of Justice that suggest Epstein made financial payments to him in the early 2000s, specifically totaling $75,000 in three $25,000 installments in 2003 and 2004, according to BBC and Reuters.
Mandelson, who was dismissed from his role as the UK's ambassador to the United States last September, stated that he found the allegations regarding payments to be "false" and that he would investigate them. He noted, "I feel regretful and sorry about this," further expressing remorse for his continued association with Epstein after the financier's 2008 conviction as reported by Al Jazeera and Anadolu Agency.
Additionally, images of Mandelson were released alongside the Epstein documents, showing him in compromising situations, which he could not recall. He remarked, "I cannot place the location or the woman and I cannot think what the circumstances were," highlighting the gravity of the allegations against him. These revelations have intensified pressure from UK politicians regarding his position in the House of Lords as noted by India Times and BBC.
