The deployment of U.S. troops to six major cities under President Donald Trump’s administration has been reported to cost nearly $500 million for the year 2025, as per estimates from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO). The ongoing operations, which involve over 10,000 National Guard troops and active-duty Marines, are projected to reach approximately $1.1 billion in 2026 if current troop levels are maintained, reflecting a significant increase in military expenditure, according to Al Jazeera, ABC News, and CBS News.
The CBO highlights that the cost of deployments varies significantly by location, ranging from about $6 million per month for approximately 350 troops in New Orleans, to as high as $55 million per month for nearly 2,950 personnel in Washington, D.C. The financial burden includes not only troop pay but also lodging, meals, and other operational costs, cumulating from various deployment scenarios and local economic conditions, as noted by the CBO in their recent reports, according to ABC News and CBS News.
Furthermore, the ongoing legal challenges surrounding the deployments have added to the costs, as troops remain mobilized without active missions in several cities. The CBO indicated that even with halted deployments in cities like Portland and Chicago due to legal issues, the costs remain unchanged because mobilized troops incur similar expenses whether or not they are actively deployed, according to Al Jazeera and CBS News.
Looking forward, the CBO speculates that with unpredictable legal and operational circumstances, future troop requirements and costs could become difficult to estimate. Nonetheless, maintaining troops at late 2025 levels is expected to continue involving substantial monthly expenditures that could reach $93 million, indicating long-term implications for federal budgets related to military deployments in urban settings, as advised by ABC News and CBS News.
