Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has expressed optimism that China will soon finalize its license allowing the company to sell its powerful H200 artificial intelligence chip. After a recent visit to the Chinese mainland, Huang commented at Taipei's Songshan Airport, highlighting that both the U.S. and Chinese markets would benefit from the H200. "I think that H200 is very good for American technology leadership. It's also very good for the Chinese market," he stated, as he indicated anticipation for a positive decision from the Chinese government, adding, "And so we just have to wait patiently," according to Channel News Asia, Reuters, and India Times.
Recent reports indicate that major Chinese tech companies such as ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent have received conditional approvals to purchase over 400,000 H200 chips, although these conditions may hinder their ability to convert these approvals into actual purchase orders. Huang noted that while Nvidia has not been officially informed of these constraints, the overarching delay stems from the Chinese government balancing its AI industry demands with supporting its domestic semiconductor sector, as detailed by Channel News Asia, Reuters, and India Times.
The H200 chip has gained significant attention in the context of U.S.-China trade relations, creating a focal point of contention. Huang emphasized that Nvidia faces strong competition from local Chinese semiconductor companies, underscoring the need for substantial orders to sustain operations. He mentioned the logistical challenge in managing production with their manufacturing partner, TSMC, stating, "If H200 is approved, we will work with TSMC to schedule and plan the supply and deliver as fast as we can," as reported by Channel News Asia, Reuters, and India Times.
