A tragic plane crash in northeast Colombia on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of all 15 individuals aboard. The aircraft, operated by state-run airline Satena, went down in a rural area of Norte de Santander province shortly after departing from CĂșcuta, bound for Ocaña. The flight lost contact with air traffic control just 12 minutes into the journey, according to India Times, Reuters, SCMP, and CBS News.
The plane, a Beechcraft 1900 turboprop with the registration number HK4709, took off shortly before noon. It was reported that the aircraftâs emergency beacon had not been activated, complicating the search efforts, and local officials in the vicinity were the first to notify authorities of the crash site. Upon locating the plane, officials confirmed there were no survivors, as noted by the Colombian Transportation Ministry and covered by multiple sources including India Times and CBS News.
Among those killed was prominent local lawmaker Diogenes Quintero and his team, including Carlos Salcedo, a candidate for the upcoming elections. The crash occurred in a mountainous region known for its illegal coca production, and concerns regarding flight safety in such rural areas have been raised. Colombian President Gustavo Petro and Vice President Francia Marquez expressed their condolences on social media in response to the tragedy, mourning the loss of public servants dedicated to their communities, according to Reuters, SCMP, and CBS News.
