EU Designates Iran's Revolutionary Guards as Terrorist Organization Amid Nationwide Protest Crackdown

Credited from: SCMP

  • The EU has designated Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization amid widespread protests.
  • The decision reflects international condemnation of Iran's violent suppression of protests, resulting in thousands of deaths.
  • Iran's government has criticized the move as "spite-driven" and claimed it serves US interests.
  • New sanctions on Iranian officials and organizations have also been imposed by the EU.
  • Rising Tensions: The U.S. military is positioned near Iran, raising fears of potential military actions amid ongoing diplomatic frictions.

The European Union has officially designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a "terrorist organization," citing the group's role in the violent suppression of nationwide protests which have reportedly resulted in over 6,373 deaths among demonstrators and others, according to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA). This move comes amid international outrage over the Iranian government's harsh response to dissent, reflecting a decisive step by EU foreign ministers who agreed unanimously on the designation. Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, stated, "Any regime that kills thousands of its own people is working toward its own demise," highlighting the bloc's condemnation of Tehran's violence against its citizens, as noted by BBC, Los Angeles Times, and Times of India.

Iran has condemned the EU's decision as "illogical and irresponsible," with officials claiming that the move aligns with US and Israeli interests aimed at destabilizing the nation. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the EU's allegations as a "spite-driven" act and emphasized that this designation would have destructive consequences for diplomatic relations, warning against what he termed "selective outrage" as Iranian leaders point to perceived injustices in international relations, particularly concerning the ongoing situation in Gaza, as reported by Al Jazeera and Times of India.

In addition to labeling the IRGC a terrorist group, the EU has also implemented sanctions targeting 15 Iranian officials and six entities believed to be complicit in human rights violations during the protests. This includes high-ranking officials such as Iran's Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. The sanctions aim to disrupt support networks for the IRGC and prevent further atrocities, aligning with previous actions taken by countries such as the United States and Canada, reports South China Morning Post and Le Monde.

The EU's actions come amid heightened military tensions in the region, with US President Donald Trump warning of possible military action if Iran continues its suppression of protests. The US has reinforced its military presence in the Middle East as a precaution against potential Iranian retaliation. Iranian officials have stated their military readiness, signaling a possible escalation as they maintain that their actions are defensive, as discussed by Times of India, Channel News Asia, and South China Morning Post.
