The United States has recently imposed sanctions on nine vessels linked to Iran's "shadow fleet," targeting their owners and management firms because of their involvement in transporting vast quantities of Iranian oil to foreign markets. These sanctions reflect Washington's escalating pressure on Tehran, particularly in light of the brutal crackdown on protesters following dissent against the regime, according to Reuters and CBS News.
The US Treasury Department indicated that these vessels have transported hundreds of millions of dollars worth of oil, which is alleged to finance Iranian security forces and regional proxies, exacerbating the regime's repression. "These sanctions target a critical component of how Iran generates the funds used to repress its own people," stated Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, as noted by Al Jazeera and India Times.
