China and the Philippines initiated rescue operations after receiving reports of a distressed Singaporean-flagged cargo ship that capsized near Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. The ship was carrying 21 Filipino crew members. The Chinese Coast Guard reported that 17 crew members were rescued by midday, but unfortunately, two crew members later died due to their injuries, according to Channel News Asia and Reuters.

Rescue efforts began shortly after a distress call was made at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Friday. The Chinese Coast Guard deployed two vessels and initiated search operations, while the Philippine Coast Guard sent two ships and two aircraft to assist in the rescue of the crew from the capsized M/V Devon Bay. The ship was transporting iron ore to Yangjiang in southern China when it capsized, reports South China Morning Post and Channel News Asia.

As of now, four crew members remain unaccounted for, and search operations are ongoing, with emergency medical treatment being provided to those rescued. The Philippine Coast Guard confirmed that some crew members were saved by a passing China Coast Guard vessel, affirming that the mission was a humanitarian effort conducted under international maritime law. This incident underscores the challenging nature of maritime safety in an area that is often the center of territorial disputes, according to Reuters, South China Morning Post, and Channel News Asia.
