Credited from: INDIATIMES

  • OpenAI will start testing ads in ChatGPT's free and Go subscription tiers.
  • Advertisements will appear based on user queries, clearly labeled as sponsored content.
  • CEO Sam Altman emphasizes user privacy and trust in the ad model.
  • Only a small percentage of ChatGPT users currently subscribe to paid services.
  • Company faces high operational costs and seeks new revenue sources to remain viable.

OpenAI has officially announced plans to begin testing advertisements on its ChatGPT platform, targeting users of both the free service and the newly introduced ChatGPT Go subscription tier. This initiative comes as the company seeks to diversify its revenue streams amid soaring operational costs associated with maintaining its capabilities and infrastructure, particularly given that only a small percentage of its nearly one billion users are paying subscribers. The ads are set to trial in the United States with a price point of $8 per month for the Go tier, according to BBC and Reuters.

The advertisements will appear at the bottom of the chat window and will be triggered by the content of the ongoing conversation. OpenAI has assured users that these ads will be clearly labeled and visually separated from the organic responses provided by ChatGPT, maintaining a distinction to prevent confusion. The company aims for a model where ads do not influence the responses given to users, and it will not share users' conversation data with advertisers, according to India Times and Channel News Asia.

CEO Sam Altman highlighted that the introduction of ads reflects a shift in OpenAI's business model to cater to a broader user base that prefers free or low-cost services. He acknowledged that many users "want to use a lot of AI and don't want to pay," suggesting that adapting the revenue model could be key to maintaining user engagement. Furthermore, some analysts believe that integrating ads is crucial for OpenAI to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving AI landscape while ensuring accessibility and user privacy, as reported by CBS News and Channel News Asia.

Additionally, OpenAI has outlined that ads will not be shown to users under 18 and will be excluded from sensitive topics such as health and politics. Altman emphasized that the ads will not detract from the user experience, stating, "We prioritise user trust and user experience over revenue," reinforcing OpenAI's commitment to user safety amid its pivot into advertising, according to India Times and BBC.
