  • Canada and China aim to improve relations through a newly announced strategic partnership.
  • PM Mark Carney emphasizes cooperation in agriculture, energy, and finance.
  • This visit marks the first by a Canadian prime minister to China since 2017.
  • Trade tensions remain a significant issue, with ongoing discussions around tariffs.
  • Both nations seek to navigate a complex global trade environment impacted by US policies.

During a recent four-day visit to China, Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the potential for a "new strategic partnership" between Canada and China, aiming to enhance cooperation in key sectors such as agriculture, energy, and finance. Carney stated that "together we can build on the best of what this relationship has been in the past to create a new one adapted to new global realities," highlighting the importance of this partnership for stability and prosperity amid prevailing global tensions, according to SCMP and Al Jazeera.

Xinhua reported that this meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the first visit by a Canadian leader to China since 2017, follows earlier engagements designed to thaw relations strained by tariffs imposed by the U.S. and mutual economic retaliation. Both leaders indicated a commitment to revive bilateral cooperation, which has been largely frozen following disputes that peaked in 2018 with the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou, according to Le Monde and Channel News Asia.

Amid these diplomatic efforts, Carney highlighted the need for Canada to diversify its trade relationships, reducing its economic dependence on the U.S. particularly after President Donald Trump's administration imposed tariffs that have adversely affected Canadian industries, according to Reuters and SCMP.

While Carney's visit did not yield any immediate announcements regarding the contentious tariffs that have complicated trade between the two nations, discussions regarding tariff reductions are ongoing. Canada had previously imposed a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles while China responded with heavy tariffs on a variety of Canadian agricultural products, notably canola oil, leading to a significant decrease in imports, reports Al Jazeera and Channel News Asia.
